Trail Work Day in Two Harbors

The new snowshoe trail in Two Harbors is a spider web of trails totaling six kilometers. It is open to dogs, fat bikes, and all manner of hikers and snowshoers. It boasts a rocky ridge as well as creeks, uplands, and lowlands. Not surprisingly, this trail was well used its first winter (2021-22). Trails take maintenance, and this is the time of year for winter trail preparation. Between the nine kilometers of trail on the Erkki Harju Ski Trail and the snowshoe trail, many volunteers will be needed. A trail work day is planned for Saturday, November 12. Volunteers will meet at the Fairgrounds buildings. There will be two work shifts, from 9:00 a.m.-noon and 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. They will be followed by the Erkki Harju Ski Trail Annual Meeting at Cedar Coffee Company at 5:00. Pizza will be provided and beverages available for purchase. For more information see the Facebook page (Two Harbors/Erkki Harju Ski Trail) or contact Mark Gordon at 218-3409648.

Letters to the Editor

Congressman Pete Stauber cried a river for a Chilean company that wants to mine the public’s copper from the public’s land upstream from the public’s most popular Wilderness Area. But he voted against the $1 trillion infrastructure bill that will repair bridges over real rivers—and do lots more—for the people of Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District whom he represents, however When, earlier this year, the Biden Administration cancelled federal mining leases that the Trump Administration had illegally renewed for Chilean mining conglomerate Antofagasta’s Twin Metals project on federal land adjacent to and in the watershed of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Stauber hauled out his “assault on our way of life” crib sheet (he means a way of life that existed many decades ago and that will never return) and spewed forth. But he apparently couldn’t find his notes when another giant company, Cleveland Cliffs, laid off some 400 Steelworkers in northern Minnesota because the company was miffed that the price of taconite ore was reducing its profit margin. Stauber has maintained silence over the company’s initiation of what will, by all accounts,

Two Harbors resident accepted into statewide advocacy skills and leadership training program

Nationally recognized Minnesota Partners in Policymaking selected Tara Solem Selected from a pool of statewide applicants, Two Harbors resident, Tara Solem has been accepted into the eight-month Minnesota Partners in Policymaking leadership training, which starts this fall. Participants include adults with disabilities and parents raising children with developmental disabilities. Solem is a single parent and has a daughter with Down syndrome. The disability leads to frustration and emotional difficulties when her daughter cannot finish her schoolwork. Solem would like to see more inclusion in after school and summer school activities since her daughter is often pulled out of class for special therapy services. This added support would allow her daughter to improve her skills and learning retention. Dental services that take Medical Assistance are hard to find in her area. Solem is the Duluth contact for the Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota and organizes monthly meetings for families and additionally coordinates delivery of Jack’s Basket, an organization that is a resource and support, providing welcome gifts to families who have a newborn with Down syndrome. Talking about her daughter, Solem said, “(she) has taught me to slow down and enjoy each moment. She makes me laugh and enjoy time together, she loves everyone she meets and spreads joy. I would not change her for the world, but the world needs a little changing.”

Squared Away

Operation Green Light In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day, calling on the nation to “solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting and enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain.” This November 11, we will come together as a nation on Veterans Day to honor and celebrate these brave individuals who have served our country in uniform. Now more than ever, our Veterans and their families need our support.
