You may have caught word that the week of September 4th was national suicide prevention week. Hopefully you and your loved ones have awareness of the abundance of mental health resources in our communities, as well as nationwide. (If not, skip to the end of this article.) But this month, our focus is on how to practice mental wellness throughout the entire year and how to build resilience as one strategy for suicide prevention. The following is adapted from CentraCare’s “Bounce Back Project” (feelinggoodmn. org). Five pillars of resilience have been identified. Look at them and consider developing the one area in which you feel the least proficient. Self-Awareness-the understanding of yourself, such as thoughts, emotions, and how others relate to you. Mindfulness-a state of active attention without judgment, “living in the moment,” “unplugging.” Practicing gratitude can fall under this category and can take many forms. One quick way is to identify three good things at any given moment. This is an effective way to have conversations with your children or to start a meeting at work.

MnDOT announces availability of $12.5 million for Greater Minnesota community project grants

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota communities, schools and their partners are invited to apply for funding on local projects that enhance transportation goals, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The $12.5 million in federal funding is available through the Transportation Alternatives program in Greater Minnesota (each region has a sub-targeted fund). This program offers a competitive grant for communities, schools and regional agencies to fund pedestrian and bicycle facilities, historic preservation, Safe Routes to School and more.

University of MN Awarded HRSA Grant for Rural Communities Opioid Response in Grand Portage and Cook County

October 4, 2022 – The Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) announced last week that they have awarded $1,000,000 to the University of Minnesota, in partnership with The Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Sawtooth Mountain Clinic and Cook County Public Health and Human Services to strengthen and expand substance use disorder services including opioid use disorder prevention, treatment and recovery services in Grand Portage and Cook County. Local consortium partners include: · The Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa · Sawtooth Mountain Clinic · Cook County Public Health and Human Services · University of Minnesota – College of Pharmacy · University of Minnesota - Medical School · University of Minnesota – Extension · Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health · Recovery Alliance Duluth · Cook County School District ISD 166 · Carlton, Cook, Lake, St. Louis County Community Health Board · Cook County Sherriff ’s Office · Cook County Higher Education · Harm Reductio Sisters · Oshki Ogimaag Charter School · Great Expectations School · Birch Grove Community School · Violence Prevention Center 'HRSA funds rural communities that can demonstrate high need for increased substance use prevention, intervention, recovery, and harm reduction services along with a strong consortium of dedicated individuals and agencies to support this work,” said Laura Palombi, Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Students with the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy and Principal Investigator for the grant project. “I'm thrilled to be working with such a strong consortium and am looking forward to finding ways to increase capacity and services for the Grand Portage and Cook County community.'

OCTOBER 8, 2022 100 YEARS AGO: v Last Sunday witnessed the re-dedication of the Swedish Methodist Church and the ceremonies were carried out with wonderful success, a large crowd being present at all three services morning, afternoon, and evening. The Swedish Methodist church is now thoroughly completed and takes its place foremost with the finest and prettiest buildings of Two Harbors, and is a wonderful asset to the community to have another mark of beauty take its place with pride and joy.
