The Reluctant Editor

The worrywarts of the world are among us. I say worrywarts of the world simply because the worries over immigrants and “losing our way of life” isn’t solely an American problem. Italy recently elected a neo-fascist party into power and Sweden, of all places, voted for a far right party worried over the same issues. Thank you social media, the internet and the failure to “check your sources” as I’ve harped about in past columns. In this country, book bans, the talk of critical race theory and replacement theory are all the rage for those folks who’ve lost their minds to anger and suspicion.

Timber Ghost Tours introduces a novel opportunity

In Beaver Bay Jason Barstow’s Track N Racks has defied the odds not only surviving a pandemic start-up, but doing well, and now Barstow has expanded his business ventures to include Timber Ghost Tours, also located in Beaver Bay. Timber Ghost Tours is a novel business, offering ATV and snowmobile tours along local trails, something that Barstow says is the only business of its kind in Minnesota. While others offer machine rental, Barstow saw an opportunity to add in taking guests out to show them the amazing sights of the area. A resident of Silver Bay for the last 12 years, Barstow says that he has left behind a career of construction and truck driving to be closer to home four years ago. “I was burnt out on being gone all the time, and I bought the building (Tracks N Racks) but wasn’t sure what to do with it,” said Barstow. Despite advice against opening a bar during the pandemic that is exactly what Barstow decided to do in 2020, eventually adding food service to the bar as well. Building off of his idea that he wants to be an agent for positive change for his community, Barstow says the addition of his latest business is that chance.

Hibbing Invitational Cross Country meet pours rain and rainbows

In another exciting weather meet in Hibbing on Thursday, September 29, the North Shore Storm cross country team (a combination of Cook County, Silver Bay, and Two Harbors runners) raced against 25 other teams from northern Minnesota. The weather had cooled significantly from the heat of earlier meets, but was colorful again, with strong winds, puffy clouds, some sun, peasized hail, and rainbows. The Girls Varsity team had several season personal best times, including Olya Wright who took 5th (19:48), Lamar Gordon in 10th (20:19), Jocelyn Carr in 27th (21:10), Sierra Geatz (21:19), and Lexi Surbaugh who took 46th (21:52). The combined scores of the top five runners gave them a 3rd place team finish, substantially behind Hibbing and just six points behind Rock Ridge. The Boys Varsity team also showed good times and great efforts, with Ian Thorpe coming in 5th with a season best (16:43), and Cyrus Myers in 30th (18:13), Elijah Smith in 40th (18:30), Tristan Sugbaugh with 56th (18:51) and Brayden Schmidt with 62nd (19:03). The Boys Varsity team placed 6th out of 25 teams. Top finishers in the JV race were Brianna Monson who took 5th, Emma Crook (11th), and Claire Lind (14th), Keean Selin (13th) and Adam Oberg (15th). For Junior High, Grace Swartz and Ryleigh Thorpe took 7th and 8th, and Georgi Dimtrov and Ethan Fish took 7th and 14th, respectively. The nice weather, flat course, and quick times made the meet a very positive event. Head coach April Wahlstrom comments, “Finally we have good vibes for this course.” This is no small thing, as the critical Sections Meet will take place at the same course in later October. “It was a season-best time for many,” she said, and also mentioned that many of the JV and JH runners are starting to take some risks, go out ahead, and show a lot of promise for future years.

Katya’s Corner

I listened to a podcast recently (choralosophy.com, Episode 110) in which one of my favorite Braver Angels staff, Monica Guzman, discusses her book about fostering friction in a classroom. In the classroom, says Guzman, you are looking for truth, and you want students to search for it–together. This can create conflict, and a healthy classroom should expect and welcome this.
