Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty grace our community with their presence during the Fourth of July festivities, and I admire their courage stepping out in costume to welcome visitors and represent our town. Their real names are Bob and Doris Larkin, and it has been my honor to get to know them as they share a new part of their life journey together. Bob's diagnosis with Parkinson's, and Doris' role as as his caregiver has brought them into the disability community. Meeting to talk at Lakeview Golf Course in Two Harbors, they told me about their love of golf, being outside, and the relationships they have grown out on the greens. During our conversation their care for each other was clear, and so was some sadness. One of the hardest things about living with a degenerative medical condition is the loss of activities that bring us closer to loved ones and community. Bob and Doris were SO thankful for the acceptance, help, and support at the Lakeview National Golf Course in Two Harbors, especially from Jim MacDannold and the board of directors. The Lakeview staff have not only been working with the Larkins but also with Courage Kenny Northland.
