Letters to the editor

Letters to the editor, columns, and cartoons are the opinions of the contributors and not necessarily the Lake County Press. While we encourage readers to submit letters to the editor on issues they feel strongly about, we encourage writers to be respectful to one another. Your message is more likely to be heard if it is delivered in a civil manner. We also ask that letters include name, address, and phone number. Anonymous submissions or letters of questionable credibility will not be published or acknowledged. The Lake County Press also asks that letters be no longer than 350 words; however, at the editor’s discretion, longer submissions may be published occasionally. All letters are subject to editing for length, clarity, and libelous content. Letters can be submitted to editor@lakecountypress.news.

Horseshoe 2022 Wrap-up

The Lake Superior Horseshoe League played 15 weeks without interruption, but the rains of September 15 forced the cancellation of the 16th and final night of play. It was unfortunate as any one of four players had a chance to finish in first place and it could have been a very exciting night of competition.

Kitty Mayo assumes role as editor of Lake County Press

After a successful startup of the Lake County Press, writer and driving force behind the new publication Kitty Mayo will take over as editor. When Kitty was hired last January I had already tabbed her as the future editor since I adamantly insisted that my role was temporary. Our work together began late last fall as things started to fall in place for a newspaper, as writers and contributors were willing to jump on board to make it the finest newspaper in Lake County. I thank everyone for their support and willingness to be a part of this new venture. I thank our many subscribers and advertisers for giving us the chance to create a newspaper out of nothing but the hope that we can be a voice for the communities of the county and the Brimson area. The team proved they could publish a paper when I headed north to Bristol Bay, Alaska for the sockeye salmon season in June and July. They did it without me bothering them about layouts and cutlines and proper headlines and news story details. Thank you to Kitty, Katya Gordon, Laura Lee Costley, Martha Hanson, Jessica Neel and Kristina Rafn for their daily work on the publication. I hope readers enjoyed my longwinded recollections of a very busy commercial fishing season and I look forward to contributing my weekly columns and offering help and suggestions when needed. Thanks to Jeremy Gulban and the rest of the folks at CherryRoad Media for believing this could happen. Please pass on the word that newspapering is alive and well in Lake County.

Katya’s Corner

Our housing difficulties in Lake County are magnified in Cook County, where over 70% of the housing parcels are “improved seasonal recreational properties.” It was interesting to listen to WTIP’s special news program (now available at the WTIP website) that brought in four panelists to discuss the issue. Panelists included Cook County’s HRA (Housing and Redevelopment Authority) Director, the Cook County Administrator, the EDA (Economic Development Authority) Director, and a City Councilor and local contractor. I was in Grand Marais with friends and they all tuned in. I got to be part of the lively discussion that came after.

Runoff Report

Editor’s note: After much wheedling and cajoling, the reluctant editor will return to the Great March for Community Newspapers as the throng of thousands awaits the command to return north to Lake County. Tony Xzcerlippy of Tony’s Underwater Limousine Service, God and Hell Yes!, the old pilot, the Camp Shack Marching Band along with the three patient centenarians who rode atop the shoulders of the throng on three sheets of plywood borrowed from a building site near Lax Lake are set to be featured once again on the pages of the Camp Shack News-Gazette-Chronicle-Post-Press-Weekly Standard. Look for the next edition on a newstand near you.
