Letters to the editor

Letters to the editor, columns, and cartoons are the opinions of the contributors and not necessarily the Lake County Press. While we encourage readers to submit letters to the editor on issues they feel strongly about, we encourage writers to be respectful to one another. Your message is more likely to be heard if it is delivered in a civil manner. We also ask that letters include name, address, and phone number. Anonymous submissions or letters of questionable credibility will not be published or acknowledged. The Lake County Press also asks that letters be no longer than 350 words; however, at the editor’s discretion, longer submissions may be published occasionally. All letters are subject to editing for length, clarity, and libelous content. Letters can be submitted to editor@lakecountypress.news.

Locals volunteer on Sundew Coast Guard Cutter

Courtney Anderson, and her daughter Elaina, 13, say they were lucky to have the privilege of volunteering for Two Harbors Festival of Sail debut on the deck of the Sundew Coast Guard Cutter. The Sundew was first launched out of the Duluth shipyards in 1944, and ended her career with the Coast Guard in 2004. Now owned by Jeff and Toni Foster, Courtney Anderson described their experience over the weekend as nearly magical. The Andersons traveled up from Duluth to Two Harbors last Thursday on the Sundew, with Anderson saying, “I was over the moon! I could not have asked for a better experience with the Lake like glass, it was sunny and warm with a slight breeze.”

Tall Ships Bring Thousands to North Shore

The Festival of Sail in Two Harbors last week drew thousands of visitors to the waterfront. The weather for the event ranged from the low 80s down to the 50s when an easterly breeze cooled coastal shore temperatures significantly. Friday night’s rain and thunder conveniently cleared by Saturday morning, though the clear sun and sparkling waters didn’t return until late in the day. By Sunday, a brisk northeast wind made for exciting sailing out on the open lake; both the Abbey Road, Bayfield, Wisc., and the Inland Sea, Suttons Bay, Mich., were undeterred by conditions and took attendees out on the open water in two to four foot waves. One crew member from the NaoTrinidad, Seville, Spain, when asked how he liked Lake Superior, admitted that he was constantly shivering and had underestimated how cold it could be here in August.

Two Harbors Area Food Shelf receives grant from Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless

Two Harbors, Minnesota – July 28, 2022 – At a time when individuals and households throughout Minnesota are experiencing hardships in numbers never seen before, Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless (OYH) Foundation is working hard to ensure their funding reaches those in need in every corner of the state. In their most recent summer funding cycle, Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless has granted Two Harbors Area Food Shelf with $2,649 to improve their “shopping model” of food distribution for the community they serve. Two Harbors Area Food Shelf has been serving the area in Lake County since 1982. THAFS serves an average of 145 households per month, providing 80 pounds of food for a family of three. Funding from Open Your Heart will provide Two Harbors Area Food Shelf with the purchase of a glass door freezer to allow for easy ‘client choice’. This piece of equipment will allow Two Harbors to fully embrace the ‘client choice’ model of distribution and will improve their overall ability to meet the needs of the community by allowing them to best offer frozen items that are often the most desired by shoppers.
