Random Strangers

I met this nice couple while I was up kayaking on the Kawishiwi River with a good friend. We landed on an island to let her dog run free for a while. Rhonda Schoonmaker and Roman Shulman had been kayaking too. They are from the Chicago area and vacationing over the 4th . They said they are very glad to be in this beautiful place and that we need more places like this in the world.

Pies! I’ve been baking up a storm folks, Strawberry Rhubarb, Peach, I really don’t need an excuse to bake. A little secret, I also, enjoy eating them! Despite the strange growing season of cool weather, then scorchers, our apple trees are looking heavy with baby apples, the choke cherry trees look heavy with cherries, and the grape vine is loaded with grapes, our garden is coming along, with a lot of heavy care. Soon it will be canning season, that also hits at peak humidity of the summer. Can’t win ‘em all, you must process when the crop is ready. It’s nice to take a dip in the pool after to cool down if need be. Until next time…..

Thoughts from a Pastor’s Heart

Rise and Fall “The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill.” On a friend’s recommendation, I listened to a podcast by that name. It’s about how Mark Driscoll and Mars Hill Church moved fast, broke things, broke people, expanded to 17,000 members, before ultimately collapsing almost overnight, all as a result of dysfunctional leadership.

Nature Nurtures

July is my absolute favorite for so many reasons, but especially for the weather. Not everyone is like me enjoying the warm and humid summer days, and if not, we are very fortunate to have one of the world’s largest air conditioners out our back door. People flock to the shores of the majestic Lake Superior, and no one can blame them. It is one of many spaces that should be and remain protected for us and future generations to come.

Waterless Boat Cleaning Station at Silver Bay Marina

At this week’s County Board meeting, Liz Anderson from Lake County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) shared the news that the department had been approved for grant funding to help purchase a “waterless boat cleaning station,” which will be permanently placed by the public access ramp at the Silver Bay marina. This solar-powered device will be in use by next season, once an agreement is worked out with the DNR (Department of Natural Resources). The SWCD will operate and maintain the unit, which includes a wet/dry vacuum, blower system, tethered hand tools, and lights. It records each use in a database to allow for accurate tracking and cleaning. While this station has been proposed before at other public access points, and is in use in other parts of the state, this is a first for Lake County. It is hoped that voluntary use of the system to “Clean, Drain, and Dry” boats before transporting to other bodies of water will significantly reduce the spread of aquatic invasive species. The unit is covered and winterized but stays on site during the winter.
