Well, the time has arrived, and we wait with baited breath for August 4. What’s done is done, mostly; I’m still waiting for cleat installation on the Breakwall so the boats have something to tie up to. Curiosity is overwhelming all other anticipatory emotions. How the heck is this thing going to go?

In an announcement last week Cleveland-Cliffs said that it will keep its Northshore Mining facility in Silver Bay shuttered at least through April of next year. Originally put on hold this May through September, the extension of the closure comes as hard news for many throughout the northshore and Iron Range communities.
At the committee-ofthe-whole city council meeting in Two Harbors this week police chief Rick Hogenson gave a detailed outline of his safety plan for the upcoming Festival of Sail, scheduled for the first weekend in August.

At a recent regular Two Harbors city council meeting it was mentioned that online virtual access to city meetings was planned to be ended soon. In a phone call with city clerk Patty Nordean a proposed plan for transitioning to alternate access to meetings for the public was outlined.

One spring about twenty years ago when my husband Mark and I were working on our first sailboat, Amicus, Mark attempted, without much thought, to hoist himself onto the dock from a sitting position below in our dinghy. The dinghy slid under the dock and Mark landed in the water. It was over his head–barely–and he managed to limit his swim to under two seconds by furiously pushing himself up and, fully clothed and suffused with adrenaline, wiggle his way up and onto the dock where he surreptitiously scanned the Knife River marina to see if this fiasco was observed or recorded by anyone. At the time it seemed only I had witnessed this, and my inability to contain my mirth did not endear me to Mark at that moment as, streaming with water, he slunk into the cabin to change. We estimated that the water at the time was in the high 30s.
You know, life is good. My little flip phone says so. There’s a silly little logo with a smiley face on it and I might as well go along with that. Summer is here, though in Naknek, Alaska we’ve had one of those Bering Sea influenced seasons with little sun and ample wet and cold. It makes first time crew members look at the skies and ask, “Is it always like this here?”
