Two Harbors Quilters Create and Donate!

There is a saying, “Behind every great quilter is a big pile of fabric!” This is true. This year it was a big pile of terry cloth towels behind the Two Harbors Quilters! The Two Harbors Quilters are a local group of people from the surrounding area who get together every month to share ideas and quilt projects they are working on.

Nature Nurtures

What a relief to have ample moisture in our region this year so far, though those in the Rainy River basin are struggling with too much. I am personally attempting to take what nature grants us with ease after last year’s drought. I spent a lot of time over winter thinking on how we can better conserve water resources. We currently use rain barrels and years ago landscaped a rain garden into our yard. Each year I incorporate more native plants and trees into our landscape. Of course, these efforts were accomplished to help conserve water. Now my thought process has changed and I’m not only thinking about what we can do to conserve, but also mitigate the effects of too much water.

I recently joined disability advocates from around Minnesota to attend Dreaming Disability Justice led by Mia Thor, a 2021 Bush Fellow. I learned why people say “This is Jenna,” before speaking inclusively during Zoom meetings. This is because people who are deaf and hard of hearing need to watch the interpreter and not hunt around the Zoom cubes to find who is speaking. Being vulnerable- I was reminded of my need for greater patience when conversing with people who need to repeat themselves or topics. To be inclusive is to be intentional, patient, flexible, and truly desiring to make a safe space for all to be heard in whatever way their voice is given to word.

Finland News

Hello Folks! We blinked and it’s the middle of Summer! What are your plans for this month? It will no doubt be a busy one, with parades, fireworks, family BBQ’s, town festival, baseball/softball games. Plenty of things to get out and enjoy. If you are looking for more low key options here are a few; take a walk in the woods, go on a picnic, hike to that lake and take a dip, fish at your secret honey hole, sit in your garden, get out and camp, get a fruity drink, slushie, or ice cream on a hot day, take a nap in a hammock (if you dare… skeeters), watch a sunset, sit by a bonfire, pick some wildflowers or forage for fruits, slow down and just be present in life, say no sometimes, take a breath, enjoy the sunshine or a rainstorm, summer will be gone in another blink, enjoy the month of July!

Thoughts from a Pastor’s Heart

The story is told about the scene in a San Diego courtroom where two men were charged with robbing a small store. A witness to the crime was being questioned by the prosecuting attorney when she was asked the following sequence of questions: “Were you at the store at the time of the robbery?” “Yes,” came the reply. “And did you see the faces of the two robbers?” The witness nodded. The attorney then turned up the intensity of his questioning and asked in a loud voice, “Are these two men present in the courtroom today?” There was no need for a reply, however. The two defendants immediately raised their hands.
