Brimson-Toimi News

Having just passed summer solstice, we are now in the heart of our northern summer! Rounds of hot, blustery weather with storms that roar through and take down trees, root ball and all, seem to be the pattern these days. Between clearing trees and working on my many trails, I have had the chance to fight off the tsunami of bugs this year …. well, I have seen it worse, but it is definitely a buggy one! The river has remained high, and it is hard to imagine it will sink to August lows, but it always does. It is a season of urgency with gardens that demand attention for all they will provide later. Birds sing their hearts out. The wild plants pop up, flower, and go to seed faster than I can keep up. I was shocked when I came upon the flowering wild clematis and then a day later bunchberries, lady slippers and twinflowers blooming - tip of the iceberg so to speak! Blueberry bushes are full of green berries – may they make it to full blue! After the drought of last summer, I am reluctant to complain about the rain. I am happy enough to get days off from hauling water from the river with my ATV/bucket wagon to keep gardens and flowers going. It’s a short season so no surprise we are in continual high gear …. Work, fun, whatever … hope you are enjoying the season of light and life!

I have always been a self-identified “non musically inclined” person. And by that, I mean, not understanding pitch, unable to comprehend when I’m in tune or the patience to read music. However, a good friend saw the opportunity for us to enroll in a local Ukulele beginners’ class about fours ago and I was all for it. I can say I tried and gave it my best shot and even learned the words to the third verse of “You are My Sunshine”. Yet, I believe it is best for me to enjoy great music from a distance and leave it up to those who know what they are doing.

Pet of the Week

Dijon is a 2-year-old Epagneul Breton (French Brittany). He is extremely active and loves to play. He is a bird hunter and a pointer. He hunts both pheasants and grouse and squirrels of course. Dijon would like to remind everyone that he is looking for new playmates at the Two Harbors Dog Park. The dog park is located just to the east of the hockey arena in the outdoor hockey rink spring through fall. The dog park is always open but a small group of loyal friends gather every Saturday morning from 10 am to noon and Wednesday evening 6:30 to dusk. Dijon would love to see you there. See more on Facebook at Two Harbors Dog Park.

Finland News

As I was outside watering the other day, I notice the trees here look like they will produce a nice chokecherry crop for jelly, and I immediately got excited for jelly making! Other exciting non news here, I have been planting and replanting rhubarb around the yard hoping to spread the joy and have an abundance next season, you really can’t have too much rhubarb, can you? If you are thinking to yourself yes, yes, you can have too much, then you need to bake more! That’s all I have for this week folks…. Until next time.
