CUP is Avs to lose… Yesterday was a travel day for the Stanley Cup finalists, the Colorado Avalanche and the Tampa Bay Lightning and tonight; Game three will be played in Tampa Bay. Hopefully, for the Bolts, home ice will bring them the extra energy they will need to dispatch the speedy Avs as they continue toward a possible Stanley Cup three-peat.

Todd Ford, Public Information Coordinator On June 19, 1865, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas finally received word that they were free from bondage. It had taken Union forces until that day to reach Texas in sufficient numbers to announce and enforce the federal order that ended slavery.

Lawsuit challenging mayor recall dismissed

A lawsuit brought by Tim Jezierski and two anonymous individuals against the city of Two Harbors and the Resign or Recall group was dismissed by the Lake County court on Wednesday. In a second litigation attempt to stop the recall of Mayor Chris Swanson, Jezierski’s group had filed a challenge to the legality of the city’s charter, and specifically to the apparent lack of definition of the term “malfeasance”.

Calling Local Artists and Musicians! With summer in full swing, we have a full calendar of events and programs here at the library! Thanks to a generous grant from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council, the library will be hosting local artists, craftspeople, and musicians on Thursday afternoons throughout the next year. Music will be the first, second and third Thursdays of each month from 4:30-5:30pm and artist/craftspeople demonstrations will be on the fourth Thursday of each month from 4:00-6:00pm.

Another week of summer has whizzed by. Where do the summer months go? Enjoying all seasons is key to living on the North Shore, summer to me is; line dried clothes, cut grass, hose water (always tastes better I don’t care who you are), the sound of the birds, road construction (ahhh), the smell of dirt, the air after a rain storm, the breeze as it blows the smell of lilacs through the open window, the taste of fresh peas from the garden, long days outside, the smell of barbecuing, family gatherings, fireworks, the crackling of camp fires, roasting (or burning marshmallows), splashing in water, laughter, robin nests, planting flowers, gardening, and more. What is Summer to you? Until next week……

Thoughts from a Pastor’s Heart

Dear Friends in Christ~ Jacob’s second wife Rachel desperately wanted a baby. She prayed and prayed and miracle of miracles she conceived and she bore a son! When it came time to name this miracle baby she chose the name Joseph which meant “May God add” because, she said, “May the Lord add to me another son!” She had asked and asked and asked for a son, so wouldn’t you expect her to shout out an exuberant thank you? Rather, she said, “God, send me another… the exact same size, make and model…And I have a feeling that there was a tone in her voice which added, “and make it snappy, I’m not getting any younger here.” Doesn’t that seem more than a little ungrateful? And yet, I have to say a word of praise for Rachel’s choice of names.
