Cold Day at the Track

Both the Mariners and the Agates participated in a frigid meet that was hosted by Two Harbors on Tuesday, April 26. Due to wet conditions on the Two Harbors track, the meet took place at Esko. Out of the eleven schools participating, the Silver Bay boys took 4th as a team, and the Two Harbors boys took 7th. The Two Harbor girls took 2nd place, and the Silver Bay girls placed 7th. Lake County Press Prep Sports Notebook

Two Harbors softball finally got underway this past week, the girls going up against Polar League foes Esko and Moose Lake-Willow River. “We played our first softball games last week on Thursday,” said coach Ori Scherer, “and shook off a lot of rust.” At Esko, a 21-4 loss, Scherer said the girls hit the ball pretty well and got on base many times.

Richard Carlson, 79, of Two Harbors, died Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at Lake View Memorial Hospital with his family at his side. Dick was born March 21, 1943 in Minneapolis to Robert Carlson and Hildur (Peterson).

Alma Oman Carlson, 96, of Two Harbors, passed away on April 18, 2022. Alma was born in Brimson on October 18, 1925, as the sixth child of Axel and Adelina (Skogman) Oman.

Ina Backman

Ina Ethel Banttari Backman died peacefully on April 19, 2022 at Barross Cottage 2 in Two Harbors, MN. She was 95. Ina was born November 7, 1926 in Bismarck, ND to Jacob and Hilma Banttari. When she was about 6 years old, she moved with her family to a farm near Hibbing, MN and after a few more years moved to another farm near the Hibbing airport. Each farm was only a little less poor than the previous one.

Many years ago, while I was going to Law School at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, I lived in a graduate student dormitory, Centennial Hall.

In 2013, our family was sailing into Cape May, New Jersey, on a blustery, chilling day. There were logs sticking up out of the brown water where we were headed, and Mark was up at the bow with our flip-phone, calling the nearest marina and trying (quickly!) to find out if we had enough room to anchor between deadfalls. After a moment, he walked back to where I sat at the wheel in a bit of a daze. “The phone broke.” He held out half the phone to illustrate. The other half was in the deep.
