Ena Mae Bjorum Kulas

Ena Mae Bjorum Kulas was born on February 26, 1924 in the dining room of the family home. A room reserved for special meals and the birth of babies. Her parents were Elise Jentoft and Carl Bjorum, both from Norway. She passed away peacefully, with her children at her side, on March 3rd, five days after her 98th birthday. She was the youngest of 6 children and lived the longest. She went from the baby to the matriarch.

Aleta Jean Johnson

Aleta Jean (Morrill) Johnson passed away peacefully on March 2nd, 2022 in her home while bravely battling cancer. She was born in Morrisville, Vermont on July 9th 1956 to Jack Morrill and Catherine Morrill. She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Ray Johnson. Sons Kevin Johnson, Jeremy Johnson, Jesse (Isabel) Johnson, Chris (Amy) Johnson. Grandchildren Victoria Johnson, Kevin Johnson Jr, Jesse Johnson Jr, Sean Dugas-Johnson, Mya Dugas-Johnson, Evelyn Dugas-Johnson. All who she loved very much. Sister Angela (Rob) Morrill and brother Curtis Morrill. Many many close friends. Aleta was preceded in death by both of her parents, her brother R. Donald Morrill II (“Donnie”), and a grandchild, Ethan James Johnson. A special thank you to her close friend Wendy Danielson for her help and support.

Dennis Eugene Haglund, age 88, a resident of Blaine, MN and Silver Bay, MN, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 7, 2022. Dennis was born to Pete and Hilda Haglund and grew up in the small iron range town of Old Babbitt, MN.

Sleeping on Ice. From the South Arm of Knife Lake the early light was just appearing in the east when a skim of frost fell from the hood of my sleeping bag and landed on my face, waking me up. My nose was cold, and I could tell it was a chilly morning for March— my minimum thermometer would register an overnight low of -31 F. Tucked in the woods near where the dogs were staked out, my buddy Jethro (a nickname we have used for each other since our college days) was asleep on the dog sled, and it would be another couple of hours before we would emerge into rapidly warming sunlight that helps makes winter camping easier than it is two months earlier.

Runoff Report

As was reported in last week’s Camp Shack News-Gazette-Chronicle-Post-Press-Weekly Standard a plan was hatched to turn the legions in the Great March for Community Newspapers back in the direction of Lake County. The huge encampment had stalled after swallowing the Carlton County towns of Nickerson, Duquette, Kerrick and Bruno but a renewed vigor was found, as well as unintended romances and intrigue, and the challenge to turn in unison and without injury the thousands of good-natured NUFA-induced folks in the massive procession fell to the reluctant editor and Tony Xzcerlippy of Tony’s Underwater Limousine Service.
