Runoff Report

Well, the reluctant editor found himself in a bit of a pickle. As was reported in last week’s Camp Shack News-Gazette-Chronicle-Post-Press-Weekly Standard, the legions in the March for Community Newspapers had stalled after swallowing the little Carlton County towns of Nickerson, Duquette, Kerrick and Bruno. The reluctant editor did manage to revive the spirit of the crowd by pulling at their heartstrings to offer support to the many people who would be losing their jobs at the Northshore mine, processing plant, railroad and port.

Hagedorn Completes 24th Birkebeiner

The conditions were nearly perfect in Hayward, Wisconsin this year with temperatures in the teens and 20s and crystal blue skies for the American Birkebeiner Marathon where Two Harbors resident Steve Hagedorn completed his 24th race at age 63. The race course is no picnic, with four major hills that include sharp turns where a pile-up at the bottom is not unusual. The uphills can be dicey too; unless everyone stays in lock-step with everyone else, having your pole stepped on is a definite possibility. “We look like ants, climbing up,” Hagedorn commented. Most of the logjams are in the first half, but he said it’s not all bad, saying, “In a weird way it helps, because you’re focusing so much on not crashing that you don’t worry so much about how far you have to go.” No collisions this year, though “I came close,” said Hagedorn

In Defense of Mayor Swanson

I have known Two Harbors Mayor Chris Swanson for about 12 years. We do not socialize, but talk often about our shared interests of politics, love of country, community and family. Chris always talks about making the area a better place for the citizens, and his family to live. I have watched the personal attacks on Chris for the last few weeks and want to share my thoughts.

Better Virtual Access for Two Harbors Council Meetings

To the Editor: Given the newsworthiness of city council and mayoral activity these days, the public (even non-resident public which considers itself strongly Two Harborsidentified) deserves some transparency around governmental proceedings. While Zoom coverage of meetings is a gesture in that direction, Councilor Rennwald learned at this week’s meeting, when tuned into Zoom from afar apparently, how dismal that medium can be.
