SHIRLEY ANN TATTERFIELD

Shirley Ann (Olson) Tatterfield, 85, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2021. After growing up in Two Harbors, Minnesota, Shirley travelled with her husband Don while he was in the military and retired in Colorado Springs. Shirley was predeceased by husband Don and survived by her two children Brenda and Terry. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and many loved family members and friends. Shirley lived a life full of joy and will be fondly remembered and sorely missed. A graveside memorial service will be held on Friday, April 29, 2022 at Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs at 3:00 pm.

Lorne Rafn, 85, Two Harbors, died Thursday at Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation in Duluth. Lorne was born March 26, 1936 to George and Thelma (Hansen) Rafn in Two Harbors.

St Urho’s is fast approaching, there is less than 4 weeks to prepare for the Parade. This year’s theme is St. Urho fly’s the Coop! The Parade will be on Saturday, March 12th, at Noon through Finland on Hwy 1. If you would like to have a float in the parade, please contact Parade Coordinator Cheri Bischoff at 218-220-9947 or 218-353-7743 to register. Patti J. Paulson is putting together a unit for the parade to thank all Fire Fighters who selflessly work to keep everyone safe. She has flags to carry, costume pieces to share and a banner or sign. CLOVER VALLEY You’ve heard it before and so have I. In January and February the NHL regular season is typically referred to as the “dog days of winter.” And so they are. The Minnesota WILD is about to get a rather large dose of it too. Because the NHL had missed multiple games last fall and early winter due to pandemic issues the league decided not to go ahead with its Olympic participation. And with upwards of 100 games to reschedule and make up due to that the second half of the regular season was going to be compacted into a short timeframe.

From the Outside

Sir Lancelot was a northern mutt. We never knew what his dad was, other than that he himself was some kind of hunting dog hybrid. But his mom was an Alaskan Malamute, and by the time he was full grown, weighed the same as me for a while—86 pounds. He had over-sized paws and long, flappy ears, a deep chest. I think my folks saw an ad in the paper and got him for free.

Runoff Report

The reluctant editor and the thousands who were on the march for community newspapers had slowed in Carlton County after the throng had swallowed the little communities of Nickerson, Duquette, Kerrick and Bruno. News of the impending idling of Northshore Mining had taken the wind out of the sails, so to speak, and the great moving encampment did a bit of soul searching and settled in for the night.
