The North Shore Nordic Ski team finished its regular season with a blustery meet at Giants Ridge on Wednesday Feb. 9. Conditions this year have been colder, generally, than in recent years and this final meet was no exception. While the temperatures were warmer than usual, (in the low 20s), the wind chill made it feel like one of the coldest yet. Intermittent snow showers blew horizontally, giving the impression that the snow never landed, and wisps of snow whipped up frequently, creating temporary whiteouts for skiers in the more open areas. The beginning of the race was straight into the wind, and even the most vigorous sprinter looked like it was a struggle to pick up the pace. Before their races skiers hopped, skied, swung their arms, and tightly wrapped themselves in the pre-race cloaks. After, they cooled down quickly and were sent off the course to layer up quickly before the sweat froze.
