Twin Metals loses leases

Twin Metals Minnesota’s plans for a copper-nickel mine near Ely were dealt a devastating blow Wednesday, when the Biden Administration canceled two minerals leases needed for the project. The decision is the latest setback for the company, which has spent more than a decade developing plans for an underground mine, several miles south of Ely, that could bring hundreds of new jobs to the area, yet faced fierce opposition from environmental interests.

Restrictions lifted on Federal Relief Funds for county

The Lake County Board of Commissioners met on Jan. 25 in Two Harbors. Chairman Rich Sve began the meeting with a reading of a proclamation honoring frontline workers and, with “Project Bluelight,” encouraging all to display blue lights from Jan 24-31. “We extend our utmost appreciation, gratitude, and sincere thanks,” he said, “to medical staff, teachers, service workers, emergency workers and all others on the front lines during the pandemic.”
